WHO USES HOOKAH IN THE UNITED STATES?
This may be surprising but hookah is growing popular among college students in the United States. Hookah bars/lounges are popping up across the country and are seen as a place to gather with friends and socialize.
In the Twin Cities, hookah is really popular among East African Immigrant groups (Oromo and Somali) and the young adults/college students (like we said before). One study of college students found that nearly half (46%) of college students have reported that they have tried hookah. In Minnesota, 18-24 year old's reported the highest rates of hookah use; nearly 4% of all the 18-24 year old's and 9% of the 18-24 year old cigarette smokers also reported that they have used a hookah.
HOW DO HOOKAH “LOUNGES” WORK?
Hookah is usually smoked in a social setting. Hookah lounges or bars are run just like a café. Customers come in, sit down, and order a flavor of hookah tobacco from a menu. The hookah pipe is then prepared and “served” to the customers, who will smoke the hookah on site. A typical hookah session will last between 30-90 minutes.
